Can't Live With Em' Can't Live Without Em'...

Photobucket
Devra Davis is the Director of the University of Pittsburgh's Center for Environmental Oncology recently put out recommendations that we should be using a speakerphone or ear piece. The report says children, who have thinner skulls and developing brains, should use cell phones only in case of emergency. And heaven forbid anyone should carry a cell phone in a pocket or clipped to a belt. "You're just roasting your bone marrow," Davis said. Cell phones have been wildly popular for only a matter of years, and it can take at least a decade for cancers to show up. Studies contradict each other, and scientists bicker: Some will tell you with great conviction that there's nothing to worry about. Others will tell you with equal conviction that an epidemic of brain tumors may be just around the corner. The cell phone industry itself says "the overwhelming majority of studies that have been published in scientific journals around the globe show that wireless phones do not pose a health risk. Below are a few tips to limit your cell phone risk.

1. Use the Speakerphone

Nothing is near your head. "Hold it away from a minimum of a few inches. A foot or two is ideal," said Magda Havas, an associate professor with the Institute for Health Studies at Trent University in Ontario, Canada. Every inch you can get away from your body, the radiation reduces very quickly. "Hold it out two inches, and the radiation drops by a factor of four. Hold it out four inches, and it drops by a factor of 16," she says.

2. Use a wired headset with a ferrite bead

A ferrite bead is a clip you put on the wire of a headset. The concern is that the wire itself emits radiation into your ear. The bead is designed to absorb the radiation so you don't. They're inexpensive and available at stores or online. Of course, if the phone is in your pocket or clipped to your belt, all bets are off, because the phone itself will be radiating into your body. So if you're worried about radiation, keep the phone as far away as possible.

3. Use a Bluetooth earpiece

A Bluetooth earpiece still has radiation, but it's at least 100 times less than the radiation you get when you hold a cell phone to your head.

4. Use a "hollow tube" earpiece

It's just like a regular wired earpiece, except the last six inches or so -- the part next to your ear -- is a hollow tube. There's no wire under the plastic.

5. Get a phone with less radiation

Phone radiation is measured in specific absorption rate, or SAR. To look up the SAR for your phone, check this list on CNET.com.

You might think the experts mentioned above all use earpieces or a speakerphone. Not so. Several said they hold it right up to their heads because they use their cells so infrequently, they're not worried about radiation. "I use it maybe once or twice a week, no more than 10 minutes," said Challis, the former head of the British committee that studied cell phones and radiation. "I use a land line whenever I can." It's the exposure, day after day, year after year, that matters. As Challis, who's retired, puts it, "If I were younger, I'd take this much more seriously.

China Blocks Websites To Olympic Press

Photobucket
Journalists connecting to the Internet at the Beijing International Media Center (BIMC) are discovering that despite promises of an open reporting environment, China is still blocking access to some Web sites. So far there have been 3 confirmed site blocks including Amnesty Internationals site and a Falun Gong site as well as Human Rights Watch. China routinely blocks access to Web sites it deems inappropriate, including those containing pornography, violence, magic and superstition themes, and especially anti-government material, such as those critical of the Chinese Communist Party or supporting independence for Taiwan, Tibet, or Xinjiang. A representative from China Netcom, the official provider of broadband and other fixed-line telecommunications for the Olympics, including the BIMC, could not immediately be reached for comment.

Gilbert Arenas spends 1 Million Dollars On His New Pool

I guess Mr. Arenas has wasted no time in spending some of his new money after recently signing a $111 Million dollar contract with The Washington Wizards. Below are few facts about the monstrosity currently in production.

* The stone for the "mountain" cost nearly half a million dollars.

* There are three different fish tanks, one going in the "grotto," one in the front hall, and one in the basement. Their normal retail price would have been about another half-million.

* The tank in the basement will have a recess with a couch in it so Gil can "relax and look up at the fish."

Wow...it must be nice.

Redman - Run My Block

Redman Comment's On His New Whip 4 09' Below....LOL!!!

Journalistic Objectivity?

Personally I feel this a bipartisan issue fueled by capitalism. It is completely naive to assume that this is a one way street. Since when has any journalist turned a deaf ear to "on the record" or "off the record information" from any political figure Democrat or Republican, let alone a White House Press Secretary. It's their job to report the news. It's not shocking that Former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan is snitching on his ex-colleagues/Bush Administration in this video, considering the current release of his 341 page book "What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington's Culture of Deception." I think an idiot could see the angle Mr. McClellan is taking here...He is trying to sell his book. I hate to seem like a conservative with this post...believe I'm not. I just believe that "bullshit" is not a one sided issue, rather a Bipartisan tactic served as fix to key players with in media conglomerates contentiously searching for content.

British Billionaire Sir Richard Branson Unveils Space-Tourism Mothership

Photobucket
Sir Richard Branson showcased "White Knight Two," a key piece of his fledgling commercial space program. The public showing was the first concrete evidence of progress since the Rutan-designed SpaceShipOne became the first private, manned rocket to reach space in 2004. After the groundbreaking flights, Rutan and Branson partnered to commercialize on the success. Branson dubbed the venture Virgin Galactic. Don't get too excited yet about paying 200,000 for a ticket to board this spacecraft. There are still significant hurdles before WK2 takes off for its first official commercial flight. In the history of spaceflight, most astronauts have been in government programs. In recent years, a handful of wealthy people have paid about $20 million each to ride Russian rockets to the international space station. Virgin Galactic envisions a future where space voyages will become as common as airplane travel, it wants to fly 500 people into space in the first year. If it succeeds, that would be on par with the same number of people who have gone up in 45 years of space travel. So far, more than 250 wannabe astronauts have paid the full amount or put down a deposit to fly with Virgin Galactic, but when they will float in zero gravity is unknown. Rutan has declined to release a schedule. Virgin Galactic stopped predicting after it said in a 2004 press release that flights could begin in 2007.

Dont Believe The Hype: Iron Man Still Reigns Supreme

Photobucket
So I finally made my way to the theater to catch the long awaited "Dark Knight." It was definitely not worth the hype. It obvious that Warner Bros coughed up some extra marketing dollars to fuel the hype on this film once Ledger passed away. Don't get me wrong, Ledger's performance was definitely the highlight of the film but atleast once I considered walking out on the 2 hour and 30 minute film. I still haven't seen Hancock but so far Iron Man is still the best movie of the summer.

Army Puts NFL Star's Dream On Hold

Photobucket
In April of 2008 Army's 2nd Lt. Caleb Campbell was drafted the first round of the NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. At first the Army had no problem with the West Point football star fulfilling military obligation by serving two years as a recruiter in his spare time. On Wednesday the Army sent a letter to the Detroit Lions informing them that a change in Army policy means Campbell would have to cease getting ready to play for the football team."Campbell has been directed to cease full-time participation in professional football to perform full-time traditional military duties," Army Adjutant General Lt. Col Jonathan Liba wrote to the Lions. The letter said Campbell could apply for release from active duty obligations in two years. The Army said in a statement that Campbell deserved the recognition for his football career, but must wait to play.

Leno Out, O'brien In

Photobucket
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Conan O'Brien will take over the "Tonight Show" next June — and what happens to deposed host Jay Leno after that is anybody's guess.

Leno's last show will be Friday, May 29, and O'Brien will start the following Monday, June 1, NBC executives told a Television Critics Association meeting Monday.

NBC is angling to keep Leno with the network but the late-night king has indicated he's ready to jump ship. NBC competitors, including other networks and syndicators, are eager to help him make the leap.

Ben Silverman and Marc Graboff, NBC Entertainment co-chairmen, were asked about the specter of Leno being hired by ABC and overpowering O'Brien in the ratings.

"We really believe in the decisions we've made with our partners, including Jay" and are standing by them, Silverman replied.

Jimmy Fallon is poised to take over O'Brien's "Late Night" in March or April of 2009, after honing his approach in brief Internet shows, Silverman and Graboff said.

O'Brien will wrap his "Late Night" run sometime in the first quarter of the year, with exact dates to be determined, the executives said. O'Brien reruns will fill the gap until Fallon takes over.

Obama Makes First Trip To Afghanistan

Photobucket
KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Sen. Barack Obama arrived Saturday in Afghanistan on the first stop of his tour of the Middle East and Europe, aimed at boosting the U.S. Democratic presidential hopeful's foreign policy credentials, his campaign confirmed.
The U.S. senator from Illinois left Washington on Thursday and stopped first in Kuwait to visit U.S. troops there, according to Obama campaign spokesman Robert Gibbs.

Obama plans to visit Iraq, although details of the trip have have not been made public for security reasons.
Obama spoke briefly to a pool reporter about his trip just before leaving Washington.

"I'm looking forward to seeing what the situation on the ground is," Obama said. "I want to, obviously, talk to the commanders and get a sense, both in Afghanistan and in Baghdad of, you know, what the most, their biggest concerns are. And I want to thank our troops for the heroic work that they've been doing."

Asked if he would have tough talk for the leaders of Afghanistan and Iraq, Obama said he was "more interested in listening than doing a lot of talking."I think it is very important to recognize that I'm going over there as a U.S. senator. We have one president at a time, so it's the president's job to deliver those messages," Obama said. The fight in Afghanistan has become a more pressing issue on the political radar. Three times as many coalition soldiers and other military personnel have died in July in Afghanistan than in Iraq.On Sunday, nine U.S. soldiers were killed in a fight with about 200 Taliban militants in eastern Afghanistan. It was the deadliest attack on U.S. troops in Afghanistan in three years.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Wednesday that U.S. officials are looking for ways to send more troops to Afghanistan, amid the resurgence of violence nearly seven years after the ousting of the Taliban government. Gates said the hope is to send additional forces "sooner rather than later. He said the Pentagon is "working very hard to see if there are opportunities to send additional forces sooner rather than later." That likely means further reductions in troop levels in Iraq later this year to free up forces for Afghanistan.

Shortly after Obama laid out his foreign policy vision in Washington on Tuesday, presumptive Republican nominee John McCain criticized his proposals as naive and premature. McCain visited Iraq in March.

"I note that he is speaking today about his plans for Iraq and Afghanistan before he has even left, before he has talked to Gen. (David) Petraeus, before he has seen the progress in Iraq and before he has set foot in Afghanistan for the first time," McCain said."In my experience, fact-finding missions usually work best the other way around: First, you assess the facts on the ground; then you present a new strategy."

Obama on Tuesday called the war in Iraq a "dangerous distraction" from the battle in Afghanistan, and said if he is elected one one of his top goals will be to finish the fight against the Taliban and al Qaeda, which their regime harbored in Afghanistan.

"As should have been apparent to President Bush and Sen. (John) McCain, the central front in the war on terror is not Iraq, and it never was," Obama said. He said part of his new strategy will be "taking the fight to al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan."

Obama said that on his first day in office he would give the military a new mission: ending the war in Iraq.

Obama will travel to Jordan on Tuesday, then visit Israel, Germany, France and England

Myspace Kicks Off Contest For Asian Game Developers

The game development platform du jour might be the iPhone 2.0 software, but News Corp.'s MySpace hopes to make a splash with a new contest in its Asian market: TheGame08, which pits developers against one another in an attempt to create a hit social game that runs on MySpace's platform. It all leads up to the legendary Tokyo Game Show this October.

Starting Thursday, developers who are at least 18 years old and legal residents of either China, Japan, Korea, or India can enter the contest in groups of no more than three; regional semi-finalists from each country, who win trips to the Tokyo Game Show, will be chosen by a panel of judges that includes MySpace President Tom Anderson, IGN executive Peer Schneider, and Sherpalo Ventures' Sandeep Murthy. The final winner will be announced on October 9 at the gaming expo.

"MySpace is defining the future of online casual gaming by providing a global platform to showcase the best and the brightest that this incredible developer community has to offer," Steve Pearman, senior vice president of product and strategy at MySpace, said in a statement. "I am looking forward to the unique and engaging applications that this contest will inspire."

The winning application, which will be translated into English, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, will earn special promotion from MySpace (and there are some cash prizes involved, too). And for MySpace, it's a way to get some publicity for quality applications. Because its platform is OpenSocial-compatible, there have been few breakout apps there that aren't available elsewhere. A high-profile original could provide some decent buzz.

The Game Added As the Newest Member of Westside Connection?

Photobucket
According to Allhiphop.com The Game may not be retiring after all. The word is that The Game is close to joining Westside Connection. It isn't a secret that as of late Mack 10 and Cube have been on shaky grounds. Cube has announced that after the release of his new album, Raw Footage he will get to work on a new Westide Connection album with a new member. It looks as if Mack 10 is out and The Game is in. To add fuel to the fire, on Cube's new album there is a track called "Get use to it" featuring The Game and WC. It seems to me that there is a strong possibility that this move will go down. We'll just have to wait and see.

Oil Prices Fall...Slightly As Oil's 3 Day Top's $14

Photobucket
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Oil prices fell steeply Thursday, extending this week's decline to more than $14 a barrel, as natural gas prices tumbled and a report suggested that the United States may be establishing a diplomatic presence in Iran.

Light, sweet crude for August delivery fell $4.52 to $130.08 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The price fell as low as $129.75 late in the session, marking the first time since June 6 that the price has been below $130.

A sharp drop in natural gas prices scared many investors out of the energy market, said Tom Orr, head of research at Weeden & Co.

The August natural gas contract fell 79.8 cents, or 7%, to $10.60 per thousand cubic feet after the government's weekly inventory report showed an unexpected increase in supply.

"When gas cracked, [oil] really just fell off a cliff," said Orr.

Iran: A report from U.K. newspaper The Guardian eased concerns about a disruption in supplies from Iran, the second-largest producing member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. The paper said Thursday that the U.S. may announce a diplomatic interest section in Tehran in less than a month.

A State Department official said the Bush administration had not yet decided whether to seek the interest section, which would mark the first step to a permanent embassy, but indicated the administration's desire to have "people-to-people contact with the Iranian people," according to the Associated Press.

The diplomatic talk helped ease fears that the oil-producing nation could become embroiled in a conflict with the U.S. and Israel.

"The situation with this seeming olive branch with Iran from the [Bush] administration has taken out this speculative furor," said John Kilduff, energy analyst with MF Global.

Thursday's decrease in prices extends oil's losing streak to more than $14 a barrel in three days.

Crude fell $4.14 Wednesday to settle at $134.60 a barrel, following a huge $6.44 selloff the previous day - crude's biggest one-day dollar drop since the Gulf War in 1991.

Earlier in the week, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke told Congress that high fuel prices and a slowing economy may be cutting into the U.S. appetite for crude.

His statements were later backed up by the Energy Department, which reported Wednesday that U.S. crude stocks had unexpectedly risen by 3 million barrels - analysts polled by Platts had expected a drawdown.

Fuel: The data suggested that demand was low enough to build up a surplus - supplies of gasoline and distillates, which are used to make heating oil and diesel fuel, also rose.

Major airlines such as Continental and US Airways (LCC, Fortune 500) have been faced with devastating fuel costs that make air travel more difficult and more expensive.

Driving habits have also changed, as gas prices - up more than 35% from last year, according to motorist group AAA - weigh on consumers.

Regular unleaded held its record high of $4.114 a gallon for the second day, while diesel prices hit a new high of $4.845, according to AAA.

Supply: The fear that demand from the United States, still the world's largest oil consumer, will tumble remained a major focus of most investors, but it had been countered by concerns about international supply, which have been a key factor in oil's meteoric rise.

Rachel Ziemba, energy analyst with RGE Monitor, believes that oil prices are still set to go down by the end of the year, but she said "there is still a bullish story in the long term."

Brazil: Talks stalled between striking oil workers and Brazil's state-owned Petrobras, the Associated Press reported. The workers are in the midst of a five-day walkout in the Campos Basin, which accounts for about 85% of the oil shipped from Brazil.

The AP reported that Petrobras issued a statement saying it had made a proposal that met workers' demands for more time off. The union, calling the proposal insufficient, said it would discuss it with members Thursday.

Nigeria: An explosion shut down a pipeline in Nigeria, Africa's largest oil producer Thursday, according to reports. Without mentioning the explosion, Italian energy company Eni, which owns the pipeline, said an unforeseen drop in pressure forced it to cut production by 47,000 barrels of oil per day.

According to the report, officials were uncertain whether it was an accident or a strike by militants. Rebel forces in Nigeria have targeted oil facilities previously. To top of page

Undercover cops order Dubai beach coverup

Dubai is reminding visitors what it considers decent.
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP)
-- Undercover police are strolling beaches and manning watchtowers to crack down on topless sunbathing, nudity and other forms of indecent behavior in the Persian Gulf tourist haven of Dubai.

Nearly 80 people have been detained in recent days in a campaign that reveals a clash of customs in this traditional Muslim city-state that attracts thousands of Western partygoers.

The campaign against indecency on the beach was sparked after police detained a British man and a woman who were allegedly discovered having sex on one of Dubai's sprawling shores earlier this month.

Over the past two weeks, police have detained a total of 79 people for "disturbing families enjoying the beach" with their behavior, Zuhair Haroun, a spokesman for Dubai's Criminal Investigation Department, said Monday.

As a result, Dubai has embarked on a public awareness campaign to remind Western tourists and foreign residents that the city may have flashy hotels and glitzy skyscrapers but it also is located in a Muslim country with traditionally conservative values.

The city is installing signs warning tourists in Arabic, English and several other languages not to sunbathe topless or change clothes in public, said Abdullah Mohammed Rafia, an official with Dubai Municipality whose office is overseeing the public awareness campaign.

Police have installed watchtowers and dispatched undercover officers to patrol the beaches, which also will be lit up at night to curb "inappropriate behavior."

First-time offenders may be issued a just warning, but if caught twice, tourists could be referred to the public prosecutor for possible criminal charges, authorities say.

Authorities are "taking action in response to numerous complaints" filed by people who visit the city's beaches, Rafia said. Complaints have ranged from families "offended by displays of nudity" to women sunbathers who say groups of men stare at them while at the beach.

The police campaign also will target people who harass beachgoers with acts "deemed offensive, immoral or disrespectful," including loitering and voyeurism, said Dubai's acting police chief, Maj. Gen. Khamis Mattar al-Mazeina.

Unlike elsewhere in the conservative Persian Gulf, tourists in Dubai are often seen wearing skimpy bikinis on public beaches and walk the city's streets donning shorts. Alcohol is freely available in hotel bars and restaurants in this regional businesses and entertainment hub.

But many Emiratis and Arabs visiting from other Gulf countries increasingly feel Dubai's ambition to become a cosmopolitan metropolis and tourist destination is overrunning their own traditions and contradict what they feel is culturally acceptable.

Thousands of European and Asian expatriates live and work in Dubai, where native Emiratis make up only about 20 percent of its estimated 1.2 million residents. Shopping malls and fast food restaurants have replaced traditional Arab houses, and English has overtaken Arabic as the emirate's lingua franca.

Some tourists who were enjoying Dubai's simmering sun Monday said the new campaign left them confused about what is considered indecent in Dubai.

"I understand that I have to respect the rules of the country," said John MacLean, a British tourist who is on holiday with his girlfriend. But "I am not sure if I can kiss her or touch her in public" because of the new campaign, he added.

Obama calls New Yorker offensive

I saw this shit last night on the news.... this is too much, but I bet the gay republicans are loving it.

Sen. Barack Obama's campaign has sharply criticized The New Yorker magazine over the publication's latest cover illustration, which appears to portray the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee and his wife as terrorist enemies of the United States.
The New Yorker cover published Sunday shows Barack and Michelle Obama with a flag burning in the fireplace.

The New Yorker cover published Sunday shows Barack and Michelle Obama with a flag burning in the fireplace.

The cover, published Sunday, shows Obama in the Oval Office dressed in traditional Muslim attire. His wife, Michelle, wears an Afro hairstyle and has a machine gun slung over her back. An American flag can be seen burning in the fireplace, and a picture of Osama bin Laden hangs on the wall.

"The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Sen. Obama's right-wing critics have tried to create," Obama spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement. "But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree."

An e-mail from The New Yorker to CNN on Friday with an advance copy of the cover said, "Please note that it is satire -- we are poking fun at the scare tactics and misinformation that some have employed to derail Obama's campaign."

Miss Venezuela crowned Miss Universe; Miss USA trips -- again

An elated Dayana Mendoza received the crown from her predecessor, Riyo Mori of Japan on Monday.
NHA TRANG, Vietnam (AP) -- Miss Venezuela was crowned Miss Universe 2008 on Monday in a contest marked by the spectacle of Miss USA falling down during the evening gown competition for the second year in a row.

An elated Dayana Mendoza received the crown from her predecessor, Riyo Mori of Japan, and then prepared to meet a gaggle of reporters. Miss Venezuela, 22, was once kidnapped in her homeland and says the experience taught her to remain poised under pressure.

Tension got under the skin of Crystle Stewart of Texas, the second Miss USA in a row to fall down during the Miss Universe pageant. She tripped on the train of her bejeweled evening gown as she made her entrance.

During the 2007 Miss Universe contest in Mexico City, Miss USA Rachel Smith also tumbled during the evening gown competition and became an unintended star on You Tube, where the video was shown over and over again.

Like Smith, Stewart quickly stood up after her fall and continued on as if nothing had happened.

Stewart, 26, is a motivational speaker and former track and filed star who is working on a book called "Waiting to Win." The Houston native plans to open a character-development school for young children and has worked with autism victims in the Texas schools.

The final five contestants included four from Latin America: Miss Mexico, Miss Dominican Republic, Miss Colombia and Miss Venezuela. Rounding out the final five was Miss Russia.

Miss Colombia finished second behind Mendoza.

Miss Thailand won the prize for best national costume and Miss El Salvador was chosen by her peers as Miss Congeniality.

During her interview with the judges, Mendoza was asked who she thought has it easier in life, women or men.

"God made us to share and have differences," she replied, then highlighted what she regards as the different thought processes of men and women.

"Men think that the faster way to go to a point is to go straight," she said. "Women know that the faster way to go to a point is to go to the curves."

The NBC show was hosted by talk show star Jerry Springer and Spice Girl Melanie Brown and broadcast live to hundreds of millions of viewers in 170 countries.

Eighty contestants gathered in the seaside city of Nha Trang, Vietnam, vying to succeed reigning Miss Universe Riyo Mori of Japan.

Sporting yellow, green and orange bikinis, the 15 semifinalists strutted across the stage during the swimsuit competition to the sounds of Lady Gaga, who belted out the pulsating "Just Dance" in a platinum blond wig. Miss Vietnam, Lam Thuy Nguyen, was greeted with a roar from the Vietnamese audience.

The final 10 then competed in the evening gown event.

They performed in front of a panel of judges that included international fashion experts and Donald Trump Jr., whose father, the real estate magnate and TV star, co-owns the pageant with NBC.

This year's contestants spanned a wide range of experiences and aspirations.

Miss Albania was a professional basketball player. Miss Argentina says she has paranormal experiences. Miss Antigua & Barbuda is fascinated by snakes. Miss Angola was in a plane crash while trying to escape a conflict during her country's civil war.

The show has been a publicity bonanza for Vietnam, where beauty contests are very popular. The contest featured segments on many of the nation's most popular tourist destinations, such as Hue, Hoi An, Sapa and Ha Long Bay.

The program set has been dominated by iconic Vietnamese images, such as bamboo trees, conical hats and lotus flowers.

Anheuser-Busch sold to Belgians for $52B

Anheuser-Busch sold to Belgians for $52B

ST. LOUIS, Missouri (AP) -- Belgian brewer InBev has announced it will buy its U.S. rival Anheuser-Busch for $52 billion to create the world's largest brewer.

The acquisition means control over America's largest brewer, the No. 2 worldwide, moves overseas. Based in St. Louis, Missouri, Anheuser-Busch has more than 48 percent of American market share with brands that include Bud Light.

InBev confirmed the details of the purchase of Anheuser-Busch early Monday. It first bid for Anheuser-Busch on June 11.

InBev is the world's second largest beer maker, with brands that include Stella Artois and Becks.

The deal must be approved by shareholders and European and US antitrust regulators. The merger will produce the fourth-largest consumer product company worldwide.

Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. did not return messages seeking comment Sunday evening.
The Wall Street Journal said the deal was for $70 a share, a $5 increase over the offer Anheuser-Busch rejected in June.

It wasn't immediately clear how long approval might take from regulators and shareholders. Several Missouri politicians have expressed concerns about the merger -- especially how it would affect the approximate 6,000 people employed by Anheuser-Busch in St. Louis.

InBev has said it plans to use St. Louis as its North American headquarters, and that it will keep open all 12 of Anheuser-Busch's North American breweries.

InBev SA announced its intent to try and purchase Anheuser-Busch on June 11. The Anheuser-Busch board initially voted against the merger, calling the initial $65 per share offer too low.

That prompted much squabbling between the companies over the past few weeks. InBev filed a motion seeking the removal of all 13 Anheuser-Busch board members; Anheuser-Busch filed suit calling the InBev effort an "illegal scheme" that threatened to defraud Anheuser-Busch shareholders. Among other things, the suit noted that InBev failed to disclose it operates a brewery in Cuba.

So it was with some surprise when reports surfaced on Friday that the two companies were sitting down for merger talks, reportedly after InBev upped its offer by $5 to $70 per share.

The merger, if completed, will bring to an end to one of the most iconic names in U.S. business and a name synonymous with St. Louis. From college buildings to offices to the stadium where the Cardinals play, the Busch name is virtually everywhere in the Gateway City.

Eberhard Anheuser acquired the Bavarian brewery in 1860 and renamed it E. Anheuser & Co. His son-in-law, Adolphus Busch, joined the company in 1864 and it was eventually renamed Anheuser-Busch.

The company survived Prohibition by selling products ranging from ice cream to root beer.

In addition to opposition from politicians and civic leaders, at least two Web sites sprung up opposing the merger. SaveBudweiser.com claims to have more than 60,000 signatures from merger opponents. SaveAB.com hosted a recent anti-merger rally that drew hundreds to downtown St. Louis.

InBev has not said if layoffs will occur as a result of the merger. But some cutbacks seem likely.

Even without the merger, Anheuser-Busch said last month it planned to cut pension and health benefits for salaried employees as part of an effort to slash $1 billion in costs by the end of 2010. The plan called for offering early retirement to 1,300 salaried workers 55 and older.

The cost-cutting effort -- dubbed "Blue Ocean" by the company -- was part of a strategy to fend off the merger.

The beer industry has been consolidating in recent years amid rising costs for transportation fuel and key ingredients.

Congratz Brangelina!!!!!!!! ITS A BOY.....AND A GIRL!!!!!

Angelina Jolie and her partner, Brad Pitt, are welcoming the arrival of twins.
PARIS, France (AP) -- The Brangelina twins are here: Angelina Jolie has given birth to a girl and a boy, and dad Brad Pitt took the whole thing in stride.

Angelina Jolie and her partner, Brad Pitt, are welcoming the arrival of twins.

The obstetrician who delivered the twins, Dr. Michel Sussmann, said the actress, the babies, Jolie and Pitt "are doing marvelously well."
The 33-year-old actress gave birth to a boy, Knox Leon, and a girl, Vivienne Marcheline, by Caesarean section about 8 p.m. Saturday in Nice in southern France. Jolie had a local anesthetic and was conscious throughout, the doctor said.
Pitt was in the delivery room at the seaside Lenval hospital as the babies were born one minute apart, Sussman said, the boy weighing just over 5 pounds and the girl 5 pounds.
"He was perfectly calm and everything went well," Sussmann said.
"He was very happy ... The emotion was very strong for him," the doctor added. "Angelina Jolie was speaking, was laughing with her husband. They were happy."
"The mother, the babies, the father are doing marvelously well," he said.

Sussmann said the Caesarean was moved forward from its originally planned date "for medical reasons" so the babies could be born "in the best conditions." The doctor did not give details.
He said Jolie is expected to stay in the hospital for a few more days and that she now needs rest. The four other Jolie-Pitt children -- Maddox, 6; Pax, 4; Zahara, 3; and Shiloh, 2 -- have not yet seen their new sister and brother, he added.
The doctor said he believed the baby girl's middle name was chosen in honor of Jolie's mother, actress Marcheline Bertrand, who died in January 2007 after a 7 1/2-year battle with cancer.
Jolie had checked into the hospital late last month to rest and be monitored by her doctor before the birth.
Before that, she, Pitt and their children had moved into a large estate, Miraval, in the French hamlet of Correns, which is just a short helicopter ride from the hospital. Correns is about 60 miles from Nice, a resort on the Mediterranean.
Though the lenses of the world's paparazzi had been trained on maternity wards across the French Riviera, Jolie managed to slip unobserved into the clinic, which has magnificent views of the Mediterranean, reportedly arriving by helicopter on the hospital's rooftop helipad.
Pitt was seen coming and going after Jolie's hospitalization became public.
The first photos of the new twins are expected to fetch millions of dollars.
Paparazzi and curious sightseers gathered outside the hospital in Nice on Sunday, hoping for glimpses and shots of Pitt.
Local newspaper Nice Matin, which first broke news of the birth, reported Sunday that the couple have sold rights for the first photo of their newly enlarged family to a U.S. publication, which it did not name, and that the proceeds would go to charity.
The newspaper gave no source for that information. But the doctor said the couple decided to announce the birth to Nice Matin first because of its links to Nice. The newspaper called the twins "the most famous babies in the world."
Earlier in the week, the hospital said it had coated the windows of Jolie's room with a special material to prevent paparazzi from taking unauthorized pictures of the star couple.
Tourists and residents of Nice, a popular resort, welcomed news of the birth. The city's mayor, Christian Estrosi, visited the hospital Sunday to deliver the twins' birth certificates -- which spared Pitt the need to go to City Hall himself to register the babies, and run the gauntlet of the photographers waiting outside.
"It's a happy day for Mrs. Angelina Jolie and all the citizens of Nice," said Estrosi.
The mayor previously has said that the twins will always be considered honorary citizens of the city, regardless of whether they opt to obtain French citizenship

Bernie Mac Wilds Out at Obama's Campaign Fundraisor

The Obama campaign said Mac's joke was inappropriate.
The Obama campaign said Mac's joke was inappropriate.

(CNN) — Bernie Mac made a surprise appearance at a Barack Obama fundraising event Friday evening — but given heckling from the crowd and a rebuke from the Illinois senator's campaign for an off-color joke, the comedian may wish he'd just stayed home.

Introducing Obama at the high-dollar fundraising event in Chicago, Mac delivered a 10-minute standup routine during which he joked about sexual promiscuity and referred to women as "hos."

"My little nephew came to me and he said, 'Uncle, what's the difference between a hypothetical question and a realistic question?"' Mac said toward the end of his routine. "I said, I don't know, but I said, 'Go upstairs and ask your mother if she'd make love to the mailman for $50,000."'

"Hypothetically speaking, we should have $100,000. But realistically speaking we live with two hos," Mac said, delivering the joke's punchline.

Some attendees of the $2,300 per-person event immediately registered their displeasure with Mac's joke, and asked that he leave the stage.

"It's not funny. Let's get Barack on," one man shouted.

Mac introduced the Democratic presidential candidate shortly after and Obama called the comedian a "great friend." The Illinois senator also joked that Mac needs to "clean up [his] act."

"We can't afford to be divided by race. We can't afford to be divided by region or by class and we can't afford to be divided by gender, which by the way, that means, Bernie, you've got to clean up your act next time," he said. "This is a family affair. By the way, I'm just messing with you, man."

But the campaign issued a statement shortly after the event that was decidedly more serious in its condemnation of Mac's comments.

"Senstor Obama told Bernie Mac that he doesn't condone these statements and believes what was said was inappropriate," campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.

Glitches hamper iPhone launch

Problems reported as new iPhone launches

NEW YORK (AP) -- The launch of Apple Inc.'s much-anticipated new iPhone turned into an information-technology meltdown on Friday, as customers were unable to get their phones working.

"It's such grief and aggravation," said Frederick Smalls, an insurance broker in Whitman, Massachusetts, after spending two hours on the phone with Apple and AT&T Inc., trying to get his new iPhone to work.

In stores, people waited at counters to get the phones activated, as lines built behind them. Many of the customers had already camped out for several hours in line to become among the first with the new phone, which updates the one launched a year ago by speeding Internet access and adding a navigation chip.

A spokesman for AT&T, the exclusive carrier for the iPhone in the United States, said there was a global problem with Apple's iTunes servers that prevented the phones from being fully activated in-store, as had been planned.

Instead, employees were telling buyers to go home and perform the last step by connecting their phones to their own computers, spokesman Michael Coe said.

However, the iTunes servers were equally hard to reach from home, leaving the phones unusable except for emergency calls.

The problem extended to owners of the previous iPhone model. A software update released for that phone on Friday morning required the phone to be reactivated through iTunes.

"It's a mess," said freelance photographer Giovanni Cipriano, who updated his first-generation iPhone only to find it unusable.

When the first iPhone went on sale a year ago, customers performed the whole activation procedure at home, freeing store employees to focus on sales. But the new model is subsidized by carriers, and Apple and AT&T therefore planned to activate all phones in-store to get customers on a contract.

The new phone went on sale in 21 countries on Friday, creating a global burden on the iTunes servers.

The iPhone has been widely lauded for its ease of use and rich features, but Apple is a newcomer to the cell-phone business, and it has made some missteps. When it launched the first phone in the United States a year ago, it initially priced the phones high, at $499 and $599, then cut the price by $200 just 10 weeks later, throwing early buyers for a loop.

Rollouts to other countries were slow, as Apple tried to get carriers on board with its unusual pricing scheme, which included monthly fees to Apple. The business model of the new phone follows industry norms, and the price is lower: $199 or $299 in the United States.
